Main aims of volunteering with Extra-mile.

There are five fundamental aims of the Extra Mile scheme, which are:

  • to develop excellence in those Sierra Leone schools where it works;
  • to empower Sierra Leonean teachers in their work in those schools;
  • to help progress the educational aspirations of pupils and their parents in those schools;
  • to ensure sustainability in the work and achievements of Extra Mile volunteers;
  • to help build capacity and self-sufficiency within the whole Goderich Community.

As an Extra Mile Volunteer you will use your experience, skills and knowledge to support individual schools, their teachers and their pupils, to enhance their learning and their lives. Volunteering is ‘direct action’ rather than a money donation, and of course carries with it the responsibilities of doing the work yourself rather than through someone else. The work of a volunteer is not for the feint-hearted. Once you take the courageous step of joining the Extra Mile scheme, your life may never be quite the same again. You will begin to realise what a difference you can make to the lives of the people you are working with.

Although Sierra Leone is developing its teacher-training systems there are still not enough trained teachers at primary level and even fewer at secondary level. The basic, fundamental building block of any society is the provision of a reliable education system which allows pupils to progress through primary school to secondary and where possible to tertiary education. In Sierra Leone only 7% reach university/college.

The basic curriculum in all schools is taught in English and most Sierra Leonean teachers and pupils desperately need British volunteers who can speak good English and can help with basic language and number skills.
Education is a crucial factor in reducing poverty and child-labour but in Sierra Leone it is particularly vital in the promotion of democracy, peace, tolerance, reconciliation and personal and social development.

Extra Mile’s main academic aims are to establish, develop, promote, but fundamentally raise basic levels of literacy, numeracy and life skills. Even small achievements in these areas will empower young people to lift themselves out of the depths of abject poverty and help them to take a fuller part in their society and contribute to their personal growth and that of whatever family they have, their community and eventually their country.
